Acupuncture is one of the modalities of the Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been used to treat a wide range of illnesses for thousands of years. Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into the body at very specific points. The acupuncture points have been mapped by the Chinese over a period of 2,000 years, and there are more than 1,000 known points. The number and the locations of the needle insertion points are determined by a licensed acupuncturist.
Increasing basic and clinical medical researches have confirmed the existence and location of these points. Acupuncture's popularity has been increasing steadily. Many illnesses, especially those chronic conditions, can be effectively treated with acupuncture.
How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese theories of the flow of a vital energy called Qi and its influence on one's health. Qi flows through distinct channels that cover the body somewhat like the nerves and blood vessel. When Qi is abundant and free flowing, there is health. However, when Qi is depleted or blocked, physical and emotional problems ensue.
According to the Chinese medicine, acupuncture adjusts the flow of Qi in the body, leading it to areas where it is insufficient and draining it from areas where it is stuck or superabundant. Thus, acupuncture restores the harmonious balance of the body and its organs. In Chinese, there is a saying, "If there is a pain, there is no free flow; if there is free flow, there is no pain." Acupuncture promotes the free flow of Qi.
What happens during an acupuncture session?
First we catch up on your progress since the last treatment. Then, you are situated on the treatment table and your tongue and pulse are checked to determine the correct needle placement. The needles are inserted, and typically you will rest alone for 20 minutes.
What should I bring with me to an acupuncture treatment?
On your first treatment, if you are on any supplements or pharmaceutical medications, bring a list of those in with you. Because acupuncture needles may be put anywhere in your body, you might find it helpful to bring a pair of shorts to wear. For women, it may be most comfortable to wear a standard bra.
Is acupuncture safe?
When performed by a competently trained, licensed professional, acupuncture is extremely safe. All licensed acupuncturists today use individually packed, sterile, disposable needles. So, there is virtually no chance of infection or contagion.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture needles are typically not much thicker than a hair, and their insertion is practically painless. It is nothing like receiving an ordinary injection. In some cases, you will not even know the needles are in place. In others, there may be some tingling, warmth, heaviness, or a feeling of the Qi moving up and down the channels. Most people find acupuncture extremely relaxing, and many fall asleep during treatment.
Patient's Testimonial: "X-rays and MRI's didn't find anything wrong with my
knee. Nobody knew what was wrong but whatever they
tried didn't make them feel better. Finally, I saw
Amy and after the first treatment my knee pain
vanished. Now we are working on my sinuses!" --Tamara, New Hope, MN
