Will insurance cover acupuncture?
Some health insurance policies cover the expense for acupuncture treatment. You should check with your insurance company to determine policy coverage before beginning treatment. Here are questions to ask:
- Do you cover acupuncture?
- What conditions do you cover?
- Who precisely has to perform the acupuncture (MD, DC, LAC)?
- Where (hospital, clinic, provider's office) is the treatment performed?
Insurance Plans Specifics
- Medica will cover acupuncture only if it is performed by and billed through a chiropractor or MD's office. Therefore, acupuncture treatments provided by me will not be covered.
- Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota plans will cover acupuncture, but only acupuncture performed in one of their Chronic Pain Clinics.
- Medicare and most of its Supplementary Plans won't cover acupuncture.
- Health Partners DOES cover acupuncture but it has to be performed by one of their providers. I am not in their network of providers.
Do you accept insurance plans that do cover acupuncture?
Not usually. However, upon receipt of payment by you, I will give you the proper receipts for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement to you.
I will accept Personal Injury covered by auto insurance policy. However, you must have a written referral to me by your treating physician or chiropractor who must provide a diagnosis, a diagnosis code and their ID number.
Do Medical Expense Accounts and Alternative Medical Reimbursement Plans reimburse for acupuncture?
Yes, they do.
